Parliament has passed a law on establishing Motherland Fund, a special state fund financing programs aiming to improve living standards of ethnic Hungarians abroad.

The fund will help private individuals, local municipalities, associations and institutions supporting education and culture, but will exclude organizations with political activities. The fund will be operated by a number of bodies. Besides a 15-member central council, five-member chambers will be heading every area that receives funding. So far eight such areas have been established.

Compared to the wide scope of the fund’s stated aims, its financial resources will be limited. The central budget will cover HUF 1 billion this year, while additional funds are expected from private individuals, companies and organizations.
