The proportion of Hungarians who agree with EU membership has fallen from the 63% recorded in spring 2003 to 42% in spring 2005. Eurobarometer has also measured a significant rise in the number of people who are neutral about EU membership.

Hungarian respondents were most concerned about jobs moving to lower-cost countries as a result of EU membership (89%) and about difficulties faced by farmers (79%). More than half of respondents that the EU should place greater emphasis on fighting unemployment and social exclusion.

Most Hungarian respondents said that Hungary's most serious problem was unemployment, followed by the general economic situation (49% and 23% respectively). Eighteen percent of Hungarians mentioned price rises as a problem, 10% mentioned pensions and 8% mentioned taxation and housing.

The last survey was conducted in autumn 2004, since when the level of support for joining the euro zone has risen to 64%. Luxemburg and Belgium show the strongest support for the euro of all the 25 member states (87% in both countries). Support is lowest in Sweden (48%) and the United Kingdom (28%), neither of which have joined the monetary union.

Almost every second Hungarian (49%) thinks that the EU has played a negative role in inflation and price rises. One third of respondents said that the EU had a negative effect on taxation. The most important tasks facing the EU are raising the standard of education and training, improving transport infrastructure, and simplifying company registration, according to respondents.
